What to do when you find an error on your credit card bill.
You be faced with a situation sometime when you have an error on your credit card Bill and you do not know what to do about it. The mistake may be a result of recording of the transaction that you didn’t make or merchandise that you returned which wasn’t credited back your credit card account. It could also be a missing payment in your credit card balance. You can respond to a credit card billing error and try to fix it according to the rights given to you under the Fair Credit Billing Act Also Known as the FCBA.
When You Discover a Billing Error
When you discover a billing error Europe do more than just call your creditor and making aware of the mistake enough to make sure that you are exercising your rights under the FCBA. You can make the dispute over the phone as dollars through postal mail but the creditor is not required to respond till there is a written dispute sent to him. You should speak to a customer service representative over the phone and take the address of the dispute settlement department. This is important because usually the address to where you send your Bill payments is different from the dispute resolution department. You should include your name and address credit card account number as well as the details of the error that is found in your credit card will. It is a good idea to send a copy of your credit card bill with the erroneous entry highlighted. Send the dispute letter via certified mail so that you have proof that a letter was mailed and received by the lender.
What the Creditor Must Do
Once a creditor receives your letter he must write back you within 30 days. Since you send your dispute letter to certified mail you will have a receipt proving the date on which the creditor received the letter. It has two billing cycles but not more than 90 days to either correct the bill and credit any finance charges late fee or other fee that was charged or let you know the reasons why your credit card bill is correct, along with the amount that you owe and an explanation for why your dispute has not been validated.
After the creditor has notified you that there was no billing error you have 10 days to make the payment of the original sum owed to the creditor or re-dispute the error. At this point however the creditor is allowed to collect on the payment and even use a collection agency to do so. You have a right to request documentation supporting the creditor’s claim about your dispute being invalid and you owing the money according to the original bill.
Credit card dispute With Credit Bureaus
When you file a written dispute with the creditor about your credit card bill the creditor cannot report the disputed information to the credit bureau. Tell the time that’s the creditor does not respond back you saying that you dispute has been denied you are not responsible for paying the disputed amount and that the creditor cannot put any negative information on your credit report regarding the credit charge even if you don’t pay it. If the creditor decides against your dispute and finds out that there was no error on the credit report it must notify any third-party that it reports the nonpayment to that you have disputed the amount. The creditor also has to notify you that the delinquency has been reported and give you the name and address of anyone to whom the information has been reported.
