Hello Emily,
Thank you for writing in. Your spouse's bad credit will only affect you in situations where a joint account needs to be opened. Mostly in all matters of single account only your credit history will be considered. The thing with certain kinds of loans such as a home loan is that the creditors prefer the person taking the loan jointly. If you are married then they prefer that you take it with your spouse. Otherwise with someone else in the family like your parents etc. They do this because they like to safeguard their lending by having at least two co-owners on the loan from whom they can recover the money. Since you already own your home, your fiance's credit history will not be a problem. It may have an affect on future home loans. You should also know that a filing for bankruptcy stays on the credit report for a period of 7 - 10 years. After that it will not reflect on the credit report of your fiance. But unfortunately, in spite of it not being there, mostly all lenders ask their borrowers about bankruptcy filings in the past. If asked, this information should never be withheld.
Please take the advice of an accountant or a counselor if you are concerned about joint accounts and the impact of the credit history of your fiance on future loans.
But given the information that you have provided so far, your fiance's credit history should not have any impact on your home if you already own it and on your car loan payments since you already own it in your single name.
We wish you both all the best for the future with a safe and prosperous financial state of affairs.

If I have already bought my home and my fiance has a bankruptcy in his past, will this effect my home? Can I keep his bad credit from effecting me if I own my own home, already have a new car with payments, and don't open any joint accounts with him?
